Town of Aberdeen—Captain Todd Weaver with the Aberdeen Police Department has been selected to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Captain Weaver will begin the National Academy on September 26, 2009 and graduate on December 11, 2009. The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for US and International law enforcement leaders that serve to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide. Police Departments nominate their top candidates for admission. Admission to the National Academy is competitive, to say the least. Less than one percent of police officers in the country are accepted. The National Academy is 12 weeks in length, the curriculum, taught by the FBI teaching staff and other professional educators, focuses on leadership development and emphasizes critical thinking. Course offerings include legal issues, leadership, behavioral science, forensic science, law enforcement communications, fitness/health, and a specialized program in the law enforcement arts. Students are also encouraged to tackle the “Yellow Brick Road”, a grueling 6.1 mile run and obstacle course that also challenges young Marine recruits. Completion of the program will promote and enhance the personal and professional development of law enforcement leaders by preparing them for complex, dynamic, and contemporary challenges through innovative techniques, facilitating excellence in education and research, and forgoing partnerships throughout the world.

BRAC RTF Hosts Community Meeting to Discuss STEM Education in Public Schools

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (SEP 18, 2009) The BRAC Regional Task Force will host a community kick-off meeting to discuss the importance of STEM education in our regional public school systems. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 6 to 8 p.m. at 71st High School in Fayetteville. STEM is an innovative approach to education that uses Science, Technology, Engineering and Math to cultivate creativity in all students and develop their abilities to become problem solvers, innovators, inventors, logical thinkers, and strong communicators. The community kick-off meeting will engage citizens from the region who want to share their hopes for our students, our economy, and our community. Local, state and national speakers have been invited to give their perspective on STEM education. "The BRAC 2005 decision to relocate U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command to Fort Bragg brings a unique opportunity to our region," said Paul Dordal, executive director of the BRAC Regional Task Force. The Army commands are magnets to defense and homeland security jobs which are high paying, but require a skill set that has not previously been a primary workforce requirement. "To truly capitalize on the opportunity, we must prepare and train our students for a chance to compete for opportunities in high tech, highly skilled STEM career fields," said Dordal. The 11-county Fort Bragg region has been recognized for its regional educational efforts by the NC STEM Community Collaborative (www.ncstem.org), a partnership between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and MCNC based in the Research Triangle Park. The local region is only one of three in North Carolina being considered for Gates Foundation funding which would support innovation STEM education plans. The BRAC Regional Task Force and organizations from our surrounding areas - including Central Carolina Community College, Cumberland County Education Foundation, Cumberland County Schools, Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville Technical Community College, Harnett County Schools, Kenan Fellows Program for Curriculum and Leadership Development, Lee County Schools, Richmond Community College, Robeson Community College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and Scotland County Schools- joined this partnership. The public is invited to attend this Community Kick-off Meeting. Deadline to register is noon, Tuesday, Sept. 22. Due to limited seating, registration is required at http://www.bracrtf.com/meeting.php.

Comfort Keepers of Aberdeen, a provider of in-home care services for aging adults, recently attained their Home Care License by the NC Department of Health and Human Services to provide personal care services to their clients. “I am very proud of the hard work that our team has put forth to achieve licensure. The homemaking and companion services that we have been providing has greatly enhanced the quality of senior citizens’ lives,” Chad McGlothlin said. “However, the prospect to include hands-on care will enable Comfort Keepers to extend our level of care as our clients’ needs change.” The license enables Comfort Keepers’ in-home aides to provide bathing, activity and exercise, incontinence care, medication reminders, oral hygiene, and other personal care services. North Carolina requires agencies to be licensed to provide personal care services and to meet strict standards. These standards include training and skills
validation by a Registered Nurse as well as periodic RN supervisory visits in the client’s home. Furthermore, Comfort Keepers caregivers are employees and are subjected to a thorough personal background check. Each employee is insured, bonded and covered by Workers’ Compensation in case of any issues. “I consider myself fortunate to work with an organization that has seniors’ best interests at heart, said McGlothlin. “I look forward to continuing the Comfort Keepers mission of improving our clients’quality of life in the comfort of their own homes.” About Comfort Keepers®

Home Staging is Quickly Becoming a Necessity, According to Local Real
Estate Professionals, Hagan & Hagan GMAC Real Estate offers tips to help sell your home faster and for more money. A growing number of sellers in Southern Pines are giving their homes that "ooh" and "ah" model-home ambiance through what's known as staging, an increasingly popular tactic that often helps them sell their homes faster - and for more money. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), "home staging seems to be a more important selling tool than ever." NAR points to a new book, Staging to Sell: The Secret to Selling Homes in a Down Market, which found that even in today's slower housing market, 95 percent of staged homes sell (on average) in 35 days or less. On the other hand, homes that are not staged take 172 days or more to sell, if they sell at all. Local real estate professionals have seen the benefits of home staging time and again, and are convinced it can more than pay for itself, according to Hagan & Hagan GMAC Real Estate. "In a competitive marketplace, home staging can be a huge, yet subtle, way for sellers to score that all-important great first impression - the kind of feel-good impression that helps get their home sold fast," James Hagan of Hagan & Hagan GMAC Real Estate said. "With so much competition today, and with so many choices for buyers out there, it is absolutely essential for sellers to take advantage of every opportunity available to them. And that's where home staging can be a big bonus." According to Hagan, it is often a good idea to bring in an objective, third-party home-staging expert who can provide effective, results-driven home staging advice and guidance. Home staging can offer a variety of benefits, including:
* Helping sellers view their homes from the perspective of potential
buyers.
* Motivating sellers to get their homes ready for showing and selling by
removing clutter and making each and every room look its best.
* Minimizing the home's days on market.
* Helping to justify - and in some cases, even increasing -- the listing
price.
According to Hagan, staging should involve as many areas of the home as possible. Two of the most important areas to stage are the family and living rooms, because potential buyers so often focus on these spaces when considering a home. Hagan & Hagan GMAC Real Estate offers these home staging suggestions, which local real estate professionals have used with good results:
* Take down any pictures or personal items - the goal is to help buyers imagine what their belongings - not yours - would look like in your house.
* Freshen up rooms with a neutral yet warm wall paint. Your local paint
store will have dozens of samples - buy a small amount and come back and test it on your walls to see if works for your purposes.
* Look into renting a few key pieces of furniture to help freshen and
stage your home for success. For instance, if your couch is old and
shabby, rent one for 90 days or so; ditto for that rickety coffee or end
table.
* If renting isn't an option, you can often purchase a slip cover to dress up the appearance of your sofa or chairs. For more information on these and other tips for selling your home, contact Hagan & Hagan GMAC Real Estate: 510 W. Broad Street, Southern Pines, 910-295-6321.

Piedmont Natural Gas Announces Share the Warmth Program:
There’s a new program in our community that I’d like to tell you about because it gives each and every one of us the opportunity to help our neighbors in need. And it’s simple. It’s called Share the Warmth Round Up and it allows Piedmont Natural Gas customers to round up their monthly natural gas bill to the nearest dollar, with 100 percent of the difference going to assist neighbors in their communities who need help paying home energy bills. Share the Warmth funds help pay energy bills throughout the year regardless of the energy source used in the home – including natural gas, propane, oil, electricity, coal, kerosene and wood. The most it could cost any of us is just $12 a year. I’m sure you’ll agree that’s small change to change lives. Piedmont recently donated $100,000 to Share the Warmth Round Up and if 100,000 people sign up by Sept. 15, Piedmont will donate $50,000 more! If you’re a Piedmont customer, it’s easy to sign up. Just have your bill with your account number and call 1-800-752-7504. You can also enroll at www.piedmontng.com. Not a Piedmont customer? Find instructions on how to contribute at www.piedmontng.com. This is a great opportunity for High School students to meet the Police Officers, Telecommunicators and Support Staff who serve and protect our community. Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Southern Pines Police Department, 801 SE Service Road, Southern Pines. The intent of the Academy is twofold; first to give participants a “behind the scenes” look at how the department operates, and second, to build closer bonds with the youth in our community. Highlights of the program include demonstrations by the K9 Unit and Special Teams, as well as Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) techniques. Throughout the program, students will process a mock crime scene and present their case to an independent panel for review and the issuance of a simulated arrest warrant. Class participants will be afforded the opportunity to ride with an Officer while on patrol and will have the opportunity throughout the program to ask questions, voice concerns and learn more about the law enforcement profession.

Conquer Math This Summer with Sylvan's "Forward to School" Algebra
Challenge. Algebra Challenge Prepares Students and Parents for the Upcoming School Year. Each summer, parents worry that their children will forget everything they learned during the school year. To encourage math learning and discovery outside of the classroom, Sylvan Learning, North America's leading provider of in-center and live, online tutoring at home to students of all ages, grades and skill levels, is offering Sylvan's "Forward to School" Algebra Challenge for parents and teens. Beginning August 17, 2009, parents and teens can participate in this sweepstakes at www.SylvanChallenge.com. The challenge will run for the remainder of the summer and will end on September 30, 2009. "The summer months can be a perfect time to practice and improve math
skills," said Judy A. Brown, Mathematics Program Manager for Sylvan Learning. "Algebra is crucial to a teen's success; mastering algebraic concepts inherently leads to greater success in high school mathematics and, eventually, to greater success in college and a career. We believe this fun and interactive contest will not only help middle and high school students and their parents improve their math skills, but it will also prove to be a stimulating summer activity that offers the chance to win great back-to-school prizes." During this time of the year, families are looking for ways to save money on back-to-school supplies and are in need of scholarship opportunities. By participating in Sylvan's Algebra Challenge, local parents and students can win instant prizes including gift cards to Starbucks, Amazon.com, and Target; Texas Instruments graphing calculators; laptops and subscriptions to SylvanMathPrep.com - a new, online math resource for families of students in grades seven through twelve that features on-the-spot math guidance during homework time. Additionally, the winner of the first prize package will receive a $5,000 college scholarship, laptop, subscription to SylvanMathPrep.com and a graphing calculator. And, the grand prize winner will receive a $10,000 scholarship and a yearlong
subscription to SylvanMathPrep.com! Sylvan's Algebra Challenge has two elements. The first section is open to teens hoping to improve and retain their algebra skills. The other section engages parents hoping to revive some of their long-lost math skills so they can become a better resource for their children during homework time in the new school year. "We understand how challenging math - particularly algebra - can be for middle and high school students, and parents are always searching for answers to help their kids. Sylvan's 'Forward to School' Algebra Challenge was created as a motivational tool to help students learn and understand math, and be prepared for the upcoming school year," said Debbie Benicek of the Sylvan Learning located in Aberdeen. Students and parents earn entries into Sylvan's Algebra Challenge by answering a daily, multiple choice math question, with additional entries
for correct answers and referring friends. The Algebra Challenge questions target the concepts taught in middle and high school classrooms. Students and their parents can enter the sweepstakes once a day. To register for Sylvan's "Forward to School" Algebra Challenge, visit www.SylvanChallenge.com.
