Penick Village’s New Approach to Elder Care. Penick Village has taken a progressive approach to meeting the needs of elders by implementing a new small-home model of care they are calling the Garden Cottage. This concept of care is a radical change in the way staff is organized as well as the physical and cultural environment. “We vision that the residents and staff of the Garden Cottage will be a tight-knit family and it is a family that makes a house a true home,” stated Jeff Hutchins, Penick Village’s CEO. The floor plan of the Garden Cottage was designed with consideration of mobility, functionality, comfort, and quality of life. Each elder will have their own spacious private room that is large enough to fit a queen-sized bed, furniture, and a bathroom with a shower. The cottage features easy access and short distances to all areas of the house, including the living room, kitchen, dining room, and outdoor patio. Even the materials to build the cottage were considered. The design of the Garden Cottage also includes construction initiatives that provide not only a healthier environment for the elders, but are also aimed at achieving a LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficiency Design) Silver Certification award level. Upon completion, it will be one of the first of assisted-living small homes in the U.S. to have taken this progressive going ‘green’ step. The February 2010 Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will be held at Penick Village’s new Garden Cottage with a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of this cottage. So please join us for appetizers, drinks, wonderful door prizes, tours of this beautiful home, and experience first-hand how this innovative concept for care is going to make a difference. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Southern Pines Police Department is pleased to announce the Employee of the Quarter Award for the 4th Quarter of 2009. This award recognizes police department employees who have provided exemplary service to the community or performed in a manner worthy of recognition. It is the result of a peer nomination and action by the supervisory and command staff of the Southern Pines Police Department. Investigator Christopher Coleman is the recipient of the award for the 4th Quarter of 2009. Investigator Coleman was selected due to his investigation of an armed robbery case. In his letter announcing the award, Chief Letteney stated: During your investigation, you were able to identify the suspect by locating a video from a store in the area where the robbery occurred and subsequently confirmed the identity of the suspect. He was then positively identified by the victim. You presented your findings to a Magistrate who determined that probable cause existed and issued a warrant for the suspect. You coordinated the investigation with other officers, who were able to locate the suspect, arrest him and recover the weapon used in the robbery. Your thorough investigation resulted in a solid case, and in a safer community. You performed in a dedicated, professional and conscientious manner and I commend you for your outstanding performance in this case. The Southern Pines Police Department is proud to recognize Investigator Christopher Coleman with this award. He represents the professionalism and dedication to the community which is indicative of all members of the Southern Pines Police Department.

Realtor Christine Menear, a member of the sales team at WEICHERT, REALTORS® - Larose & Company, has been awarded the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Green Designation, the only green real estate professional designation recognized by NAR. Menear completed 18 hours of requisite course work designed specifically for Realtors. The courses were created in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of industry experts from across the country to ensure a comprehensive education in green homes and buildings and issues of sustainability in relation to real estate. Specifically, Menear was trained to understand what makes a property green, along with how to help clients evaluate the costs and benefits of green building features and practices, the differences between industry rating and classification systems, how to list and market green properties, the availability of grants and incentives to homeowners, and how to help consumers see a property’s green potential. “As energy costs rise along with concern for the environment, homeowners are looking for innovative ways to save money and live responsibly,” said Dick Gaylord, NAR’s immediate past president. NAR’S Green Designation was developed in response to growing consumer awareness of the benefits of resource-efficient homes and buildings. The designation helps consumers who care about energy efficiency and sustainable building practices to identify Realtors who can help them realize their green real estate and lifestyle goals. As an NAR Green designee, Menear has the knowledge and tools to become a trusted green resource for clients throughout the market. She can be reached at WEICHERT, REALTORS® - Larose & Company , located in Yadkin Park in Pinehurst-Southern Pines at 190 Turner Street, Suite D, telephone (910) 693-3300.
The “Shoes for Food” horseshoe tournament co-sponsored by WEICHERT, REALTORS® - Larose & Company and Moore County BackPack Pals raised enough funds to feed 30 families in the Southern Pines/Aberdeen area. “We intend to make this an annual event,” said the Weichert® agency’s Broker/Owner Marcus Larose. BackPack Pals is a non-profit organization through the Moore County Schools which benefit underprivileged students. WEICHERT, REALTORS® - Larose & Company is located in Yadkin Park in Pinehurst-Southern Pines at 190 Turner Street, Suite D, telephone (910) 693-3300.
