The oldest town in Moore County. Carthage has nonetheless evolved with the times. Its historic district highlights beautiful architecture and more than 50 pre-Civil War buildings, while the commercial area offers the conveniences residents expect. As the county seat, Carthage activities revolve around the courthouse. Nowhere is this more evident than in the celebrated Buggy Festival staged at the historic courthouse each May. The event commemorates the Tyson Jones Buggy Factory that brought prosperity to Carthage by manufacturing the "Cadillac" of horse-drawn carriages starting in 1855. Carthage's picturesque location makes it perfect for family recreation, including the 45-acre Hillcrest Park that features athletic fields, a walking trail, picnic area, and a large playground. The town is home to the Golf Digest awardwinner Little River Golf & Resort, a site that was once a training facility for trotters and thoroughbred race horces. Carthage is a community that embraces its rich heritage while welcoming new businesses and residents.
