Adjacent to Pinehurst, the Town of Taylortown played an important role in the well-being and growth of the Village of Pinehurst and the resort. In the early 1900s, Pinehurst was in dire need of homes for its growing workforce. An enterprising Demus Taylor, grandson of one of the first African slaves brought to the New World and descended from the Ebu tribe, created the community eventually named in his honor. The Taylor family's contributions to this small community continued with Demus son Robert Taylor, who established the town's first school, now a year-round school called Academy Heights Elementary. One of Taylortown's famous sons was Robert "Hard Rock" Robinson, a caddie to world-famous golf course architect Donald Ross whose reputation as Pinehurst's most knowledgeable caddie is legendary. Taylortown was incorporated in 1987 thanks to a passionate citizen Geneva McRae, and the town today continues in the spirit of the Taylors who envisioned a welcoming community for its residents.
