The community of High Falls sprang up near where the Deep River cascades down a 15-foot waterfall.  Native Americans called the area "Great Falls."  William England was the first to ercet a gristmill on the falls in 1780.  More than a century later in 1904, Thomas Woody built the second gristmill on the site as wellas a cotton mill and spinning mill, all part of the High Falls Manufacturing Company.  Today, these clay hills along Highway 22 make a picturesque and rural residential community.
